4-H award
Alberta 4-H has presented Rosie Templeton of the Readymade 4-H Beef and South Country Judging Clubs with its Premier’s Award.
The seven-year 4-H member was chosen from among 90 of the province’s top members for Alberta 4-H’s most prestigious award.
Templeton was named the 2009 provincial public speaking champion and regional judging champion. She has also won the platinum award of excellence and has held every position on her club’s executive.

As the winner of the Premier’s Award, she will represent 4-H at the provincial level.
Alberta 4-H has also selected 41 senior members to represent 4-H at major educational programs in Canada and the United States this year and 14 4-H ambassadors to serve two-year terms promoting 4-H and youth involvement in Alberta.
Dow prize
Three prairie farmers will win $25,000 prizes this year that will then be awarded to their rural communities.
The prizes are offered through Dow AgroSciences’ This is Where Stellar Shines contest, which is intended to introduce the company’s newly registered Stellar herbicide for controlling annual broadleaf weeds in cereal crops.
Each winner will also receive $2,500 to donate to a local, non-profit charity or organization of their choice.
The contest ends July 31. Entries can be dropped off at participating Dow AgroSciences retailers in Western Canada. Winners will be announced Oct. 1.

Ag foundation directors
The Investment Agriculture Foundation of British Columbia has four new members on its board of directors:
- Paul Brown, who represents emerging sectors, is the director of applied research for biosciences at the B.C. Institute of Technology in Burnaby, B.C.
- Don Claridge, who represents the tree fruit and grape sector, is a professional agrologist who has worked with the B.C. Fruit Growers Association for more than 35 years.
- Jens Larsen, who represents the livestock sector other than beef cattle, dairy and poultry, operates the Dot Ranch near Merritt, B.C.
- Jim Tringle, who represents community agriculture, is a professional agrologist who markets purebred Black Angus cattle, meat products, lamb and purebred Morgan horses on Glenbirnam Farm.
The new directors replace Tony DiMaria, Gerry McClintock and Gary Sandberg and join current directors Irmi Critcher, Bar Hayre, Derek Janzen, Ernie Willis, Stuart Wilson, Debbie Aarts, Chris Byra, Gay Hahn and Peter Levelton.
Non-voting directors are John Berry of Agriculture Canada and Harvey Sasaki of the provincial agriculture ministry.
IAF manages and distributes federal and provincial funding to support projects that benefit agriculture.

Alta. campgrounds on-line
The Alberta government is offering a new on-line campground reservation service that will cover 2,800 campsites in 25 campgrounds.
Users of the new service will be able to select a campsite on a map and research campsite size and features such as nearby trails, fire pit location and proximity to washrooms. They will also be able to see a 360 degree panoramic view of each campsite and campground.
The province will spend $8.4 million to set up the service, which includes a dedicated contact centre and the development of maps, panoramic photography and other visuals for the campsites.
