Stacking Canada up on gene editing livestock

Canada may want to gauge how Argentina and other countries have approached gene editing in livestock and what that has meant for local innovation.

Cheryl Hellekson of Camrose Farm Equipment Ltd. in Camrose was elected to the board of directors to represent dealers from central Alberta.

Hellekson is a Case IH and New Holland dealer with dealerships in Camrose and Grande Prairie, Alta. She is the first female director in the association’s history.

Re-elected to the board were Daryl Forbes of Duncan, B.C., Alex Reschny of Dawson Creek, B.C., and John Mathison of Saskatoon.

They join existing directors Cam Bode of Moose Jaw, Sask., Cam Kay of Lloydminster, Alta., Duane Kent of Shoal Lake, Man., and Warren Kotzer of Yorkton, Sask.

Canada West represents 400 agricultural, industrial and outdoor power equipment dealerships in Western Canada.

From sheep to lamb

The Alberta Sheep and Wool Commission has changed its name to Alberta Lamb Producers.

While wool, breeding stock, genetics and other byproducts are valuable aspects of the industry, lamb is the primary product and focus for growth.

The absheep domain name and e-mail addresses will continue to be used, but a new domain name will be adopted in the near future.

Century farm award

Saskatchewan’s Information Services Corp. (ISC) is accepting applications until March 15 for the 2009 ISC Century Family Farm Award.

The annual program recognizes families who have farmed the same land continuously for 100 years or more.

Recipients are honoured at events across Saskatchewan in June. Since the program’s inception in 1981, 2,694 families have been recognized.

The following criteria are used to determine eligibility:

  • Members of the same family must farm or ranch the land continuously for at least 100 years.
  • The family must live in Saskatchewan and continue to operate the farm or ranch.
  • Previous winners do not qualify.

Applicants must fill out an application form, which ISC then verifies with help from the Saskatchewan Archives Board.

Recipients receive a replica of their ancestor’s original land grant or title, 12 ISC Century Family Farm Award certificates and a choice of an indoor wall plaque or a price-discounted cedar gate sign.
