Wheat growers president

The Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association board of directors has elected Kevin Bender of Bentley, Alta., to be the association’s new president.

Bender replaces Cherilyn Jolly-Nagel, who announced she would be stepping down earlier this year.

Jolly-Nagel has been president of the wheat growers for nearly five years and was instrumental in helping to renew the organization. She will remain on the board of directors.

Bender, 38, farms with his father and brother northwest of Red Deer, growing barley, canola, oats, peas, spring and winter wheat on 3,800 acres.

He has a bachelor of religion degree from Taylor University College in Edmonton and serves as a director with the Alberta Canola Producers Commission. He and his wife, Sara, have three children.

Bender becomes the 15th president in the association’s 39 year history.

Monsanto funds curling

Monsanto Canada is sponsoring a new World Curling Tour event.

The Dekalb SuperSpiel will be held March 19-23 in Morris, Man., and is expected to attract Canadian teams that need to make a last move up the points list to qualify for the season- ending Players Championship.

It could also attract teams hoping to qualify for the Vancouver 2010 Games. The total prize purse is $50,400, one of the largest purses in Manitoba curling.

The men’s division will feature 24 teams with a first-place prize of $12,000. The women’s division will feature 16 teams with a first-place prize of $7,000.

The bonspiel has been endorsed by the World Curling Tour, the Canadian Curling Association and the Manitoba Curling Tour.

Money for infrastructure

Alberta communities with fewer than 100,000 residents can apply for infrastructure funding through the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component.

Funding will be provided under nine categories including water, wastewater, solid waste, local roads, culture, sports, connectivity, green energy and collaborative projects.

Projects will be evaluated by a federal-provincial committee through a competitive application-based process.

Applications close March 15.

Information and the application procedure is available at www.buildingcanadafundalberta-cc.ca.

The government of Canada and province of Alberta are each contributing $88 million to the fund.
