Organic committee
The Canadian Wheat Board is looking for organic farmers to sit on a new committee that will help determine the future of organic wheat development in Western Canada.
The committee will review applications submitted to the wheat board’s organic sector market development initiative, which will contribute up to $200,000 a year toward organic wheat and barley research in the areas of agronomy, marketing, education and varietal development.
The committee will include one farmer representative from Alberta, one from Manitoba and two from Saskatchewan, which produces twice as much organic grain and oilseed as any other province. Terms will be two years each on a staggered basis.
Other committee members will include five CWB representatives and one scientist who is not affiliated with the researchers requesting funding.
Farmers interested in sitting on the committee can obtain a nomination form by contacting Donna Youngdahl at 204-983-5799.
Researchers and farm organizations seeking funding under the market development initiative can obtain information and application forms on-line at www.cwb.ca/public/en/about/osmdi/.
Applications for funding must be received before Jan. 1.
The initiative is designed to promote more organic acreage and to provide support for the organic industry.
