Pork marketing alliance

Ontario Pork, Alberta Pork and the Manitoba Pork Council have formed an alliance to improve consumer marketing services.

The alliance, called Pork Marketing Canada, is expected to develop and implement joint marketing initiatives targeting consumers, retailers and food service operators. As part of its marketing campaign, Pork Marketing Canada has launched a new website at www.putporkonyourfork.com.

Garden awards

Nominations are being accepted until May 31 for the Prairie Garden Award of Excellence.

The award will be presented to an individual or group making a significant contribution to the advancement or promotion of horticulture in the northern Great Plains.

U.S. government investigates high input costs

The USDA and DOJ are investigating high input costs, but nothing is happening in Canada.

Letters of nomination, including details of the candidate’s achievements in horticulture, should be sent to the Prairie Garden Awards Board, Box 517, Winnipeg, R3C 2J3.

The winner will be announced Sept. 1 and will be featured in the 2008 edition of the Prairie Garden magazine.

Chicken executive

Chicken Farmers of Canada has elected a new executive council.

Executive members include chair David Fuller of Blomidon, N.S., first vice-chair Martin Dufresne of St. Félix-de-Valois, Que., second vice-chair Urs Kressibucher of Beaverton, Ont., and Keith Fuller from Maple Bay, B.C.

Chemical stewardship

The pesticide stewardship program is returning to Saskatchewan.

The program encourages farmers and pesticide users to collect and safely dispose of unwanted agricultural pesticides.

Collection dates are planned for Oct. 23-25.

The collected pesticides will be disposed of at environmentally safe facilities approved by Saskatchewan Environment. Details of the program, including a list of collection sites, will be publicized through advertising and direct mail campaigns.

Agricultural dealers will be provided with a list of collection sites and other information to assist farmers in identifying obsolete products.

Organic grant

The British Columbia government has granted $100,000 to the province’s organic agriculture industry to assist with the adaptation of new national standards for interprovincial and international trade.

The Certified Organic Associations of B.C. will use the funding to conduct awareness and educational campaigns for organic producers.

Co-op executive named

Art Postle has been appointed chief executive officer of Federated Co-operatives Ltd.

Postle joined FCL in 1976 as an internal audit director. Since then, he has served as finance manager and senior vice-president-treasurer.

He replaces Wayne Thompson, who retired earlier this year after 24 years as CEO.

Swine centre directors

Ray Price, a hog producer from Acme, Alta., has been appointed to the Prairie Swine Centre’s board of directors.

Shannon Meyer of Saskatoon was re-elected to the board for a three-year term and Eric Peters from Steinbach, Man., will return as chair for a two-year term.

Alberta highway cleanup

Young Albertans will give the province’s highways a spring cleaning this week while earning money for their clubs and community groups.

The 31st Annual Highway Cleanup Day takes place May 5, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the cleanup will take place May 12.

Motorists are asked to slow down, obey signs, and be on the lookout when passing the workers.
