Vet experience program
Alberta Agriculture is offering a veterinary work experience program this summer.
It provides practical experience and career development opportunities for students enrolled in a doctor of veterinary medicine degree program. Students enrolled in an animal health technology diploma program can also participate.
To qualify, veterinary students must have completed their first, second or third year of a degree program, and technology students must have completed their first year of a diploma program. All applicants must be returning to school in the fall.

Reimbursement is provided to veterinarians who hire students for a four-month period between May 1 and Aug. 31. Student wages can be subsidized between 30 and 50 percent.
Employers must be registered veterinarians who own part or all of a veterinary practice in Alberta. The workload must involve at least 50 percent work with large livestock. Veterinary clinics and students must complete an application. The deadline is April 16.

Rural women’s month
March is Rural Women’s Month in Saskatchewan.
Agriculture minister Mark Wartman praised rural women for their leadership in developing health care, education and social services in Saskatchewan as well as running farms and businesses.
SCFA manager resigns
Jamie Blacklock has resigned as general manager of the Saskatchewan Cattle Feeders Association.
Blacklock joined the SCFA in the summer of 2003 and was instrumental in guiding the Saskatchewan cattle feeding industry through the difficult period of BSE.
Judy MacMillan will serve as interim general manager.
The association also elected a new executive at its 2007 annual general meeting. Bill Jameson of Moose Jaw will serve as president, Jason Dean of Morse becomes past-president and Ken Pillar of Wolseley is vice-president. Directors at large include Jeff Stevenson of Melfort, Ryan Thompson of Ceylon, Chad Ross of Estevan, Brian Diesen of Shell Lake, Dennis Edwards of Craik, Brad Welter of Viscount and Kevin Woods of Moosomin.
The association also named Brian Perkins of Perkins Ag Marketing as Saskatchewan cattle feeder of the year.
Floodway expansion
Manitoba and the federal government will spend up to $170.5 million to complete the Red River Floodway Expansion project.
The project will improve flood protection for Winnipeg, West St. Paul, and East St. Paul.
Before the Feb. 23 announcement the two governments had already committed $324 million to the project. When completed, it is expected to cost $665 million. Costs are being split on a 50-50 basis between Ottawa and the province.
