Young insurance
Manitoba Agriculture has announced a new program to help young farmers cover the cost of production insurance during their start-up years.
The Young Farmer Crop Plan credit is available to farmers between the ages of 18 and 39. Applicants must prepare an annual cropping plan for a three-year period, which a farm production adviser will review by May 31.
If approved, the crop plan credit provides a premium subsidy of $200 per year for up to three years to encourage young farmers to enrol in crop insurance. It is totally funded by the province.

Recycling encouragement
The Manitoba government is seeking input from residents on a new regulation intended to improve household recycling in the province.
The proposed regulation under the Waste Reduction and Prevention Act would shift responsibility for managing municipally collected recyclable materials from the Manitoba Product Stewardship Corp. to a new organization to be established by industry stewards.
Green Manitoba, a special operating agency of the government, will co-ordinate public consultations on the new regulation. As well as consultations on household recycling, Green Manitoba will also focus on scrap tires, household hazardous waste and waste from electronic products.
Details on the proposed regulation are available at www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/pollutionprevention. Copies are also available at Manitoba Conservation’s public registries in libraries or by calling the pollution prevention branch at 945-8443 or toll-free at 800-282-8069, ext. 8443.
Deadline for comments is Feb. 26.
Youth employment
Applications from Saskatchewan employers who want to participate in the Student Employment Experience and Green Team student employment programs for 2007-08 are now being accepted.
More than 700 students have gained employment through the Student Employment Experience since it was introduced last year. The Green Team program, introduced in 2004 to help Saskatchewan young people find jobs related to the environment, has helped fund positions for more than 300 students.
Employers that are approved for Student Employment Experience subsidies will be granted up to $3,500 for full-time student positions and up to $2,000 for part-time student positions. Green Team grants of $1,000 to hire high school students and $2,500 to hire post-secondary students are available for employers providing jobs related to the environmental industry.
Employer deadlines are March 1 for Student Employment Experience applications and March 15 for Green Team applications. Adjudication committees will be selecting proposals that provide the best development experience for a student.
