Food safety

The Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre has released a training video called Sanitation – A Defensive Approach.

Centre communications director Carmen Ly said proper cleaning and sanitation are key steps in reducing the risk of contaminating food during processing.

The video covers a variety of sanitation issues and offers advice on steps that can be taken to protect against food contamination, including the appropriate use of chemicals in the cleaning process.

The video was developed with funding from Saskatchewan Agriculture.

Going beyond “Resistant” on crop seed labels

Variety resistance is getting more specific on crop disease pathogens, but that information must be conveyed in a way that actually helps producers make rotation decisions.

Saskatchewan food processors can obtain the video free of charge by contacting the food centre at 306-933-7555 or by e-mail at info@foodcentre.sk.ca.

Grazing advice

Extending Alberta’s Grazing Season is a new publication that shows how 10 Alberta producers have implemented systems that enable their cattle to graze longer into winter.

The producer profiles outline ways to manage the winter feeding season, which is the highest cost production season for cow-calf producers.

The publication is intended for farmers and ranchers in Alberta.

The 10 producers who are profiled have operations ranging in size from 45 to 6,000 cows and are located in different areas of the province, making the publication practical to all producers.

The free publication is available at all Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration offices in Alberta or by calling Alberta Agriculture’s Ag-Info Centre at 866-882-7677 or 310-FARM.

4-H Canada took a first place award in the National Agri-Marketing Association’s regional competitions held recently in Minnesota.
