Animal care board

The Farm Animal Council of Saskatchewan Inc. has a new board of directors.

Executive board members for 2007 include chair Shannon Meyers of Fast Genetics and vice-chair Tim Wiens of O & T farms Ltd.

Re-elected board members include Bob Brickley of the Saskatchewan Equine Ranching Industry, Scott Brown of Saskatchewan Agriculture, Murray Jelinski of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, Royce Reiss of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, Mark Silzer of the Saskatchewan Bison Association, Alvin Schultz from Dairy Farmers of Saskatchewan, Sandra Stephens of the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association, Jeff Stevenson of the Saskatchewan Cattle Feeders Association and Jim Teichrob of the Saskatchewan Egg Marketing Association. Newly elected to the board are Luke Perkins of the Saskatchewan Elk Breeders Association and Harvey Wagner of Sask Pork.

Organic growers should be singing CUSMA’s praises, according to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

Biofuel projects funded

Ten producer-involved Manitoba biofuel initiatives have been approved to receive federal assistance through the Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council.

The initiatives, consisting mainly of feasibility studies and business plans for biofuel production facilities, will be funded under the federal Biofuels Opportunities for Producers Initiative.

Overall commitments in Manitoba total more than $360,000.

Projects to receive funding include studies of potential biodiesel production, farm-scale cold pressed canola processing and large-scale ethanol plants.

KAP into insurance

Keystone Agricultural Producers of Manitoba has joined the membership of the Co-operators Group Ltd. The Co-operators board of directors approved KAP’s application on Dec. 1, expanding to 34 the number of Canadian organizations that are member-owners of the Co-operators group.

The Co-operators is a leading Canadian-owned insurance company. It operates as a co-operative and is owned by Canadian co-ops, credit unions and like-minded organizations.

KAP is a general farm organization.

Helping young farmers

The late William (Bill) Bryson and his wife Lynn are the latest recipients of the W.R. Motherwell Award, the highest award given by Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers’ program.

The Brysons established Bryhill Farms Inc. in 1970 at Ormstown, Que., beginning a lifelong passion for the purebred dairy business.

In 1987, they were named Quebec’s Outstanding Young Farmers. They went on to win the national title that year as Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers.

In 1989, the Brysons remodelled the Quebec OYF program and hosted the national event in Quebec in 2001. As a result, the national event now rotates annually among the seven regions.

The W.R. Motherwell Award recognizes outstanding service to an individual or couple dedicated to Canada’s OYF program.

National hall of famer

Kim McConnell, chief executive of AdFarm, is the new president of the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame Association.

The association is a not-for- profit group administered by a board of 12 Canadian directors.

FCC adds lawyer

Sharon White has been named a director of Farm Credit Canada. White, who has a background in corporate law, was approved as director Dec. 19.
