MRAC seeks proposals
The Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council requests proposals for the new Biofuels Opportunities for Producers Initiative that the federal government announced Sept. 20.
The $10 million biofuel initiative will be funded by Agriculture Canada and delivered regionally through industry councils.
The council will administer Manitoba’s initial share of funding worth $376,000. It is requesting proposals for projects that improve producers’ ability to take advantage of opportunities created by biofuel production.
Individual project funding will be capped at $300,000 and the industry applicant must provide at least 25 percent of each project’s cost.

STEP directors
The Saskatchewan Trade Export Partnership has a new board of directors.
Marc Broadbent is director of global marketing for Hypor in Regina.
Martine Carlina is president and chief executive officer of HMG Sales & Marketing Inc. in Regina.
Sean Frisky is president of Ground Effects Environmental Services Inc. in Regina.
Dale Lemke is president and chief executive officer of Display Systems International Inc. in Saskatoon.
Cameron Rizos is the senior partner and founder of Canglobal Management Consulting in Saskatoon.
They were elected during STEP’s annual meeting in Saskatoon in September.
CFA executive
Justin To has been named executive director of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture.
Since May 2004, To has helped CFA members develop farm safety net proposals and worked on the association’s biofuel strategy, food product labelling projects and the Canadian farm bill.
He has a master’s degree in agricultural sciences from the University of Guelph in Ontario and recently completed his PhD in agricultural economics at the University of Guelph’s Ontario Agricultural College.
To replaces Brigid Rivoire, who came to the CFA from Agriculture Canada in February 2001, and is leaving to become executive director of the Canadian Childcare Federation.
Agribition scholarships
Canadian Western Agribition’s scholarship committee has awarded $1,000 scholarships to five post secondary students from the Prairies: Megan Boake of Melville, Sask.; Kaitlin Campbell of Minto, Man.; Fawn Jackson of Inglis, Man.; Courtney MacDougall of Regina and Katie Songer of Rocky Mountain House, Alta.
The Agribition scholarship program supports the educational efforts of young people who have been active Agribition participants as exhibitors in the livestock classes, 4-H events and grain and forage classes or as active trade show participants.
The scholarships are intended to cover expenses associated with the second or subsequent years of post-secondary education at a recognized institution in Canada or the United States.
