Top growers contest
The Canadian Wheat Board is encouraging farmers to enter the 2006-07 master grower awards program.
The program recognizes the achievements of successful wheat and barley farmers and shares information on farm management techniques.
For the crop year beginning Aug. 1, 2006 and ending July 31, 2007, master growers will be named for malting barley, red winter wheat, hard white spring wheat and durum.
Winners in each category will share information about their experiences and growing techniques.

Simmental ambassador
Frank Mapletoft has been selected as the Alberta Simmental Association’s ambassador of the year for 2006.
Mapletoft was presented with a commemorative belt buckle at the association’s annual general meeting.
He has been involved in the Simmental business since 1969. He has served on many boards and has been instrumental in introducing innovations to the Simmental cattle industry.
He served on the Saskatchewan Simmental Association board and was chair of the ROP Test Station committee when it became one of the leading test stations in Western Canada, indexing bulls on average daily gain, weight per day of age and scrotal circumference measurement.
Mapletoft was also a founding member of the Meridian 6 Simmental Breeders, the Lloydminster & District Simmental sales committee and the Lloydminster Bull Sale committee. He has also judged extensively for 4-H in Saskatchewan and Alberta, and has also judged at Edmonton Farmfair and the Canadian Simmental Association Show in Brandon.
Cattle producers staff
The British Columbia Cattlemen’s Association has a new general manager. Bob France will assume the position effective Sept. 1.
France, from the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, has worked as general manager for the association on an interim basis for eight months.
France spent 34 years as a public servant for the B.C. agriculture department. During this time, he received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for exemplary public service and was also named agrologist of the year in 2004 by the B.C. Institute of Agrologists.
Award nominations
Nominations are being accepted for the Canadian Agri-Food Awards of Excellence. The awards recognize outstanding achievement in five key areas of environmental stewardship, innovation, export performance, agricultural awareness and education, and agricultural volunteerism.
The annual awards are sponsored by Agriculture Canada and the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. This year, the awards will be presented at the 2006 Canadian Agri-Food Awards of Excellence banquet, hosted by the fair on Nov. 6.
