Clear the stream

The Saskatchewan government has reinstated the Channel Clearing Financial Assistance program for rural municipalities.

The program funds half of the cost of removing brush and other debris from natural waterways. Funding for the program was withdrawn earlier this year but that decision was reversed.

Last year, 65 rural municipalities used more than $110,000 through the program. This year’s deadline for applications is Sept. 15.

Applications are available through Saskatchewan Watershed Authority offices in Moose Jaw, Nipawin, North Battleford, Yorkton, Swift Current and Weyburn.

For more information on the program, visit www.swa.ca.

Community funds

Rural community groups may apply for capital project funding from Farm Credit Canada’s $500,000 AgriSpirit Fund starting Sept. 1.

The fund contributes to rural community improvement projects such as emergency services equipment, playgrounds, food banks, recreation centres and care homes.

Since 2004, 78 projects have received between $5,000 and $25,000 from the program.

After the 2007 projects are chosen, FCC will have contributed a total of $1.3 million to communities through the AgriSpirit Fund.

Community leaders and volunteers from rural communities across the country are encouraged to review the eligibility criteria and apply for funding online at www.AgriSpirit.ca.

Applications will be accepted between Sept. 1 and Oct. 12, 2006. FCC will announce the selected projects in early 2007.
