McClellan honoured
Northlands Park in Edmonton has named Shirley McClellan a Northlands Park honourary life member.
The honour was conferred on Alberta’s deputy premier and finance minister on April 24 at Northlands Park’s annual meeting.
Northlands Park president Dale Leschiutta commended McClellan for her commitment and enduring passion for Alberta’s agricultural community. The award is made in recognition for meritorious service to the agriculture industry. Previous recipients include Alberta premier Ralph Klein, Horst A. Schmid, Don Mazankowski and J.R. Shaw.
Northlands Park generated more than $122 million in revenues in 2005 and is in the midst of an ambitious facilities expansion plan. The first phase, completed last fall, included the addition of 1,783 new parking stalls, enhanced gate access, lighting and landscaping. The work was funded by surplus revenues of $7.1 million.

Going beyond “Resistant” on crop seed labels
Variety resistance is getting more specific on crop disease pathogens, but that information must be conveyed in a way that actually helps producers make rotation decisions.
Future plans include a new trade and consumer show space and an expanded exhibit and support space, totaling 200,000 sq. feet, which will connect to the existing AgriCom.
Northlands Park shareholders elected six people to the board of directors for three-year terms: Barbara Dixon, Laura Gadowsky, Melanie Wilson, John Windwick, Jennifer Fiske and Earl Klapstein.
Alberta soil information
Soil information on 64 million acres of Alberta land is now available on-line for farmers, landowners and agricultural and environmental consultants.
The Alberta Soil Information Viewer, available on Alberta Agriculture’s website, contains soil, landscape and topographical information for Alberta’s agricultural zone. The site uses simple symbols and terminology to display the variation of soil types across the province.
A variety of tools allows the user to easily navigate the site, create grids, add text and calculate distances. The viewer can be accessed at www.agric.gov.ab.ca/asic.
