Rodeo moves

The West of the Rockies finals rodeo is moving to Prince George, B.C.Ê

The event, which is a culmination of the 14 Canadian Professional Rodeo Association events held annually in, British Columbia is scheduled for Oct. 13-15.

The event was held in Penticton, B.C., for the last two years.

Glen “Moose” Scott, spokesperson and president of the Wild West “5” Rodeo Group, said interest from several high profile sponsors suggests Prince George and the central interior communities of B.C. are ready to host the event.

Stacking Canada up on gene editing livestock

Canada may want to gauge how Argentina and other countries have approached gene editing in livestock and what that has meant for local innovation.

Proceeds will go to the Northland Dodge Chrysler Healthy Children’s Fund, which was created to help build a new children’s pediatric ward at the Prince George Regional Hospital.

The event will feature $24,000 in prize money.

Nominations sought

The Sunnybrook Farm Museum is seeking nominations for the Golden Furrow Award, which is given to Albertans who settled in the province between 1900 and 1930 and have made significant contributions to their rural communities.

Individuals or families are eligible to receive the award.

Grain official retires

Research scientist Jim Daun has announced his retirement from the Canadian Grain Commission after more than 30 years of service.

Daun was responsible for research and crop monitoring programs involving the quality of Canadian oilseeds.

His areas of expertise include the composition and quality of canola, flaxseed, sunflowers and soybeans; oilseed processing and analysis; quality factors in pulse crops; and nutritional aspects of fats and oils.

He also served as chair of the Expert Committee on Fats, Oils and other Lipids under the Canada Committee on Food.

He wrote 114 technical articles including 70 in refereed journals, 16 book chapters, more than 400 reports and crop bulletins and 36 articles in conference proceedings.

An adjunct professor at the University of Manitoba, Daun received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in plant science from the University of Manitoba.

He began working at the grain commission in 1975 as program manager of oilseeds.
