Municipal award
The Association of Manitoba Municipalities presented its second annual Municipal Innovation Award to the Rural Municipality of Victoria for an innovative project that used new technology to improve the water quality.
The project was prompted by a water quality problem that occurred in the municipality, which encompasses the community of Holland.
Water had a bad taste, an unpleasant odour and a tendency to stain. The municipality also had difficulty removing chemicals from the water.
Typical upgrades would have been expensive so the RM, assisted by several partners, developed a pilot project using a chlorine dioxide disinfection system, the first time such technology was used in Manitoba.

The RM improved the staining, taste and odour while using a much lower level of chemicals than other technologies and at a much lower expense.

CGC answers questions
Licensing specialists with the Canadian Grain Commission will be attending the Alberta Farm and Ranch Show in Edmonton from March 29 to April 1 to answer questions about payment protection available to producers when they deal with licensed companies.
Staff will also explain the commission’s harvest sample program, which is part of the CGC’s annual assessment of crop quality. The program is used to assess and confirm the quality and consistency of Canadian grain. Information posted on the CGC’s website tells millers, bakers and other food processors how the crop will perform.
Producers who want to send samples this fall can ask CGC staff about obtaining a sample kit in August.
Info for hog producers
The Swine Disease Matrix, a web-based tool for hog producers that enables quick access to disease management information, is now available from the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization website at www.vido.org/swinematrix.
The matrix provides detailed information from credible sources including scientific journals, proceedings and technical papers. Topics include six major areas of concern with economically important diseases: understanding the diseases; environmental controls; nutrition; pig management; prevention and treatment of disease; and economics. New content is added continuously and new features will be added. A similar project targeting the beef industry is under way and database tools for additional industries are under discussion.
