Genetics award
Harvey Voldeng, whose plant breeding program was the first in Canada to
develop small-seeded plants used to make the traditional Japanese
soyfood dish called natto, has been awarded the 2002 Canadian plant
breeding and genetics award.
Until Voldeng took his first research job with the federal government
in 1970, soybeans were not grown in Canada, except in the southernmost
point of Ontario.
Voldeng’s work with soybeans led to the release of 30 different soybean
varieties during his tenure as lead soybean breeder with the Eastern
Cereal and Oilseed Research Centre in Ottawa. These include the first
high-protein soybean variety developed in Canada. His earlier maturing
varieties with better tolerance to cold weather expanded the range for
growing soybeans. The Canadian Seed Trade Association and Germination
magazine sponsor the award.
