Pulse king

Al Slinkard, professor emeritus at the University of Saskatchewan’s Crop Development Centre, was one of three Canadians inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame during the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto Nov. 9.

Slinkard helped establish Canada as the world’s largest exporter of peas and lentils and as a top exporter of chickpeas and dry beans.

“Professor Slinkard was instrumental in building the pulse crop industry in Canada,” Graham Scoles, associate dean of research in the College of Agriculture, said in a News release

Slinkard’s breeding programs at the U of S has yielded 19 different pulse varieties including Laird, the most recognized variety in the world.

Goat fundraiser

The Canadian Boer Goat Association is holding a fundraising program that features a silent auction for the last two bucks produced by top breeders. The bucks were donated by Stan and Joyce Johnston, formerly of Darlington, Man., and are the last of the couple’s J Five line.

The Johnstons are retiring to Calgary.

One of the bucks, J5 Prince J, is a traditional purebred buck born April 4, 2003. It is the offspring of well-known buck Ram H Montana Captured and dam J5 Josephine – both show winners.

The second buck is J5 Huron, a Canadian purebred buck born April 16, 2003. Its sire is J5 Rascal, son of Ram H Montana Captured, and its dam is Blondie’s J5 Cookie.

“In appreciation for all the CBGA has done for the Boer goat industry since its inception, we have donated our last two bucks to the association, to assist, in our own small way, with the future endeavours of this organization,” said the Johnstons in a News release
