SASKATOON (Staff) — What do advisors do?

Just in case there was any doubt, the terms of reference of the CWB advisory committee make one thing perfectly clear.

The job of the advisory committee is to advise the wheat board.

It’s not there to make policy decisions or advise the federal government, but try telling that to Charlie Mayer.

The former Conservative agriculture minister was often taken to task by the committee on issues like free trade, orderly marketing and cash advances.

Be that as it may, the terms of reference list four specific functions:

  • Providing two-way communication between the CWB and farmers.
  • Providing input to the board on operational issues of concern to farmers.
  • Helping the board develop policies relating to CWB operations.
  • Participating in special projects as required.

The terms of reference add that because the advisers are elected, their views carry “a certain moral weight.”
