HOGS

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $79.07 July 23 and unavailable July 16.

U.S. hogs averaged $104.59 on a carcass basis July 23, down from $107.32 July 16.

The U.S. pork cutout was $122.37 per hundredweight July 23, up from $119.94 July 16.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to July 24 was 2.332 million, up from 2.280 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.576 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the July 24 Signature Four price was C$244.49 per 100 kilograms, up from $238.82.

Canola support gets mixed response

A series of canola industry support measures announced by the federal government are being met with mixed reviews.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $242.49, up from $238.93, HyLife was $259.26, up from $254.89, and OlyWest was $251.60, up from $246.20. OlyWest 2021 was $256.50, up from $249.20, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $261.76, up from $254.89.

BISON

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and heifers sold for $3.90-$4.15 on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.85-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased for $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

LAMBS

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 954 sheep and lambs and 94 goats sold July 19.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,128 sheep and 329 goats sold July 19.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $220-$252 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $219-$262, 70-85 lb. were $219-$252, 86-105 lb. were $219-$252 and 106 lb. and heavier were $219-$235. Wool rams were $145-$180 per cwt. Cull ewes were $128-$180.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $150-$225 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $205-$247, 70-85 lb. were $205-$250, 86-105 lb. were $205-$250 and 106 lb. and heavier were $205-$235. Hair rams were $110-$205 per cwt. Cull ewes were $100-$150.
