Hogs down
U.S. cash hog prices continued to decline on ample supply, falling pork prices and a tie-up of pork exports from the U.S. west coast.
A labour dispute has slowed container movement from ports, which has backed up meat shipments.
Packers cut pork prices sharply to try to sell the mounting inventory, which was caused by the port issue and the blizzard that tied up the northeastern United States.
Iowa-southern Minnesota hogs delivered were US$51 per hundredweight Jan. 30, down from $52 Jan. 23.

U.S. hogs averaged $65.38 on a carcass basis Jan. 30, down from $67.65 Jan. 23. The U.S. pork cutout dropped to $78.33 per cwt. Jan. 30, down from $84.38 Jan. 23.
The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter for the week to Jan. 31 was 2.260 million, down from 2.318 million the previous week. Slaughter was 2.129 million last year at the same time.
Bison stronger
The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range sold at prices up to C$4.50 per pound hot hanging weight.
There was limited activity by Canadian buyers because of the strengthening U.S. dollar.
U.S. buyers are offering US$4-$4.10 with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.
Grade A heifers sold up to C$4.40. U.S. buyers are offering US$3.85.
Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.
In the live markets, Kramer Auction sold 361 head Jan. 28 in a strong market. Bulls born in 2014 sold as high as $4. Bulls 450-510 lb. averaged $3.69 per lb. Yearling bulls under 900 lb. averaged $2.63.
Heifer calves born in 2014 400-450 lb. averaged $3.58, with yearling heifers 550-650 lb. averaging $2.83.
Light lambs up
Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported 551 sheep and 39 goats sold Jan. 26.
Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $230-$246 per cwt.,55-69 lb. were $232-$246, 70-85 lb. were $215-$240, 86-105 lb. were $191-$227 and 106 lb. and heavier were $172-$187.
Wool rams were $75-$105 per cwt. Cull ewes were $68-$108 and bred ewes were $125-$160 per head.
Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $220-$240 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $195-$220, 70-85 lb. were $185-$210, 86-105 lb. were $181-$198 and 106 lb. and heavier were $168-$177.
Hair rams were $78-$124 per cwt. Cull ewes were $66-$158.
Feeder kids lighter than 60 lb. were $195-$210. Good kid goats lighter than 70 lb. were $205-$240. Those heavier than 70 lb. were $205-$230 per cwt. Nannies were $75-$95 per cwt. Billies were $100-$145.
Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 1,117 sheep and lambs and 106 goats traded Jan. 26. Lambs sold mostly steady. Sheep sold spotty. Goats held steady.
