Hogs lower

U.S. cash hog prices drifted lower because supply was ample relative to the light demand.

Pork prices fell, and carcass weights increased.

Iowa-southern Minnesota hogs delivered were US$64 per hundredweight Dec. 5, down from $65 Nov. 28.

U.S. hogs averaged $84.54 on a carcass basis Dec. 5, down slightly from $85.35 Nov.28.

The U.S. pork cutout dropped to $92.69 per cwt. Dec. 5, down from $93.14 Nov. 28.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter for the week to Dec. 6 was 2.236 million, up from 1.991 million the previous week, which included U.S. Thanksgiving.

Bond market seen as crop price threat

A grain market analyst believes the bond market is about to collapse and that could drive down commodity values.

Slaughter was 2.317 million last year at the same time.

Fed bison unchanged, live market strong

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range were as high as C$4.55 per lb. hot hanging weight.

Grade A heifers sold up to $4.35.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

At Kramer Auction, 320 head sold Dec. 3 with 2014 bull calves 300-400 lb. averaging $3.43 per lb. and 400-475 lb. averaging $3.26 per lb.

Yearling bulls 800-900 lb. averaged $2.78, and 700-800 lb. averaged $2.66.

Heifers born this year weighing 375-470 lb. averaged $2.92, and those weighing 300-375 lb. averaged $2.83.

Heifers born in 2013 weighing 640-750 lb. averaged $2.37, and 580-640 lb. averaged $2.31.

Bred two-year-old heifers averaged $2,866 per head.

Sheep, lambs mostly steady

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported 623 sheep and 47 goats sold Dec. 1.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $200-$249 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $221-$248, 70-85 lb. were $222-$247, 86-105 lb. were $196-$227 and 106 lb. and heavier were $176-$200.

Wool rams were $53-$118 per cwt. Cull ewes were $45-$72.50 and bred ewes were $125-$210 per head.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $160-$195 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $165-$190, 70-85 lb. were $180-$200, 86-105 lb. were $176-$195 and 106 lb. and heavier were $160-$177.

Hair rams were $52-$110 per cwt. Cull ewes were $46-$80.

Feeder kids lighter than 60 lb. were $190-$210. Good kid goats lighter than 70 lb. were $195-$225. Those heavier than 70 lb. were $190-$230 per cwt. Nannies were $50-$90 per cwt. Billies were $100-$130.

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,411 sheep and lambs and 124 goats traded Dec. 1. Well-finished new crop lambs sold at a premium. All other sheep, lambs and goats sold steady.
