Hogs fall

Heavy carcasses and lacklustre packer demand pressured U.S. cash hogs lower.

Iowa-southern Minnesota hogs delivered were $90-$91 US per hundredweight Aug. 1, down from $93-$94 July 25.

On a carcass basis, U.S. hogs averaged $120.04 per cwt. Aug. 1, down from $124.27 July 25.

The U.S. pork cutout was $127.32 Aug. 1, down from $131.79 July 25.

U.S. estimated weekly slaughter for the week to Aug. 2 was 1.867 million, up from 1.862 million the previous week. Slaughter was 2.027 million last year at the same time.

Bison steady

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range were mostly $4 Cdn per lb. with some sales to $4.10 hot hanging weight.

Grade A heifers sold at prices $3.85-$3.95.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Lambs mostly steady

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported 910 sheep and 377 goats sold July 28.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $110-$205 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $182-$205, 70-85 lb. were $182-$197, 86-105 lb. were $159-$183 and 106 lb. and heavier were $168-$179.

Wool rams were $55-$100 per cwt. Cull ewes were $50-$138 and bred ewes were $125-$150 per head.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $110-$190 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $175-$196, 70-85 lb. were $156-$182, 86-105 lb. were $150-$174 and 106 lb. and heavier were $150-$169.

Hair rams were $60-$96 per cwt. Cull ewes were $56-$89 and ewe-lamb families were $150-$250 per unit.

Feeder kids lighter than 60 lb. were $175-$300. Good kid goats lighter than 70 lb. were $235-$270. Those heavier than 70 lb. were $195-$270 per cwt.

Nannies were $67.50-$145 per cwt. Billies were $125-$175.

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 1,547 sheep and lambs and 89 goats traded July 28.

All classes of well-fed lambs sold steady. Under-finished lambs sold barely steady. Sheep and goats sold steady.
