Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was not available Jan. 17 or Jan. 10.

U.S. hogs averaged $78.50 on a carcass basis Jan. 17, down from $79 Jan. 10.

Canada-U.S. trade relationship called complex

Trade issues existed long before U.S. president Donald Trump and his on-again, off-again tariffs came along, said panelists at a policy summit last month.

The U.S. pork cutout was $90.60 per hundredweight Jan. 10, down from $91.36 Jan. 10.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Jan. 17 was 2.314 million. It was 2.369 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.264 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Jan. 18 Signature Four price was $207.95 per 100 kilograms, up from $207.21.

The Jan. 18 Hams Marketing cash price was $205.95, while on Jan. 11 it was $205.93. HyLife was $221.27 this week; it was $219.84 Jan. 18. OlyWest was $209.80, down from $215.70 last week.

OlyWest 2021 was down, at $220.60, from $225.20, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $221.31 this week. On Jan. 11 it was $221.35.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices of $570-$600 per cwt., hot hanging weight, for finished bulls and $535-$600 per cwt. for finished heifers. Prices for mature bulls were not available, but mature cows were $425-$450 per cwt.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$440-$460 per cwt. for bulls and $425-$445 per cwt. for heifers.

Prices for mature bulls an cows were not available. All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were C$3 per pound for bulls and $2.70 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better.

The mixed live animal price was not available.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 83 sheep and 396 lambs sold Jan. 13.

Beaver Hill Auctions at To field, Alta., reported that 1,251 sheep and 338 goats sold Jan. 13.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $355-$430 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $380-$436, 70-85 lb. were $365-$425, 86-105 lb. were $325-$395, and 106 lb. and heavier were $280-$345. Wool rams were $185-$270 per cwt. Cull ewes were $170-$305.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $300-$390, 55-69 lb. were $360-$415, 70-85 lb. were $360-$410, 86-105 lb. were $315-$375 and 106 lb. and heavier were $280-$325. Hair rams were $190-$300 per cwt. Cull ewes were $185-$335.
