Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was not available for Oct. 18 or Oct. 11.

U.S. hogs averaged $72.05 on a carcass basis Oct. 18, down from $74.34 Oct. 11.

Bond market seen as crop price threat

A grain market analyst believes the bond market is about to collapse and that could drive down commodity values.

The U.S. pork cutout was $96.59 per hundredweight Oct. 18, up from $94.47 Oct. 11.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Oct. 18 was 2.413 million. It was 2.412 million on the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.406 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Oct. 19 Signature Four price was $206.29 per 100 kilograms, up from $205.58.

The Oct. 19 Hams Marketing cash price was $204.29, while on Oct. 12 it was $203.58. HyLife was $218.68 this week and $217.74 Oct. 12. OlyWest was $207.30, up from $205.30 last week.

OlyWest 2021 was up, at $221.10, from $219.10, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $223.08 this week, up from $220.26 Oct. 12.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices of $550-$580 per cwt., hot hanging weight, for finished bulls and $530-$560 per cwt. for finished heifers.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$430-$455 per cwt. for bulls and $410-$430 per cwt. for heifers. Prices for mature bulls and cows were not available All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were in the C$3 per pound range for bulls and $2.70 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better. The mixed live animal price was not available.

Elk

The elk meat market is picking up as autumn arrives. Very few bulls went to meat this summer because the trophy market was too strong. Those that moved for meat sold for $4-$6 a lb. hot carcass weight after transport was paid, depending on quality and market.

Cull cows are moving now at the same price range. Not many bulls were cut for velvet antler for the same reason. What was harvested was all sold at $30-$35 f.o.b. the farm.

Breeding stock sells for a wide range of prices but closely follows the market prices of their herd mates and genetic relatives.

Trophy bulls for harvest preserves sold into strong demand in three different markets:

Saskatchewan chronic-wasting disease-positive preserves from CWD-positive producer farms.

Negative preserves from negative farms.

Negative and certified farms to preserves in qualified U.S. states.

For all categories, the bottom line price was $2,750 per bull f.o.b. the farm. From there, prices diverged widely.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 218 sheep and 268 lambs sold Oct. 14.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,969 sheep and 582 goats sold Oct. 7.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $260-$345 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $270-$315, 70-85 lb. were $235-$288, 86-105 lb. were $210-$255, and 106 lb. and heavier were $205-$235. Wool rams were $120-$165 per cwt. Cull ewes were $120-$220.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $250-$335, 55-69 lb. were $240-$310, 70-85 lb. were $230-$270, 86-105 lb. were $210-$245 and 106 lb. and heavier were $205-$220. Hair rams were $130-$165 per cwt. Cull ewes were $130-$215.
