Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $56.60 Sept. 27. It was $56.42 Sept. 20.

U.S. hogs averaged $75.11 on a carcass basis Sept. 27, down from $76.88 Sept. 20.

USDA’s August corn yield estimates are bearish

The yield estimates for wheat and soybeans were neutral to bullish, but these were largely a sideshow when compared with corn.

The U.S. pork cutout was $95.75 per hundredweight Sept. 27, up from $94.15 Sept. 20.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Sept. 27 was 2.417 million. It was 2.366 million on the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.409 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Sept. 28 Signature Four price was $203.23 per 100 kilograms, down from $204.67.

The Sept. 28 Hams Marketing cash price was $201.23, while on Sept. 21 it was $202.67. HyLife was unavailable this week, but it was $217.55 Sept. 21. OlyWest was $205.20, down from $206.70 last week.

OlyWest 2021 was down, at $219.10, from $219.50, and HyLife’s adjusted price was unavailable this week. On Sept. 21 it was $218.09.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices of $545-$575 hot hanging weight per cwt. for finished bulls and $520-$550 per cwt.. for finished heifers.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$430-$455 per cwt. for bulls and $410-S$430 per cwt for heifers. Prices for mature bulls and mature cows were not available. All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were in the $3 per pound range for bulls and $2.70 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better. Mixed live animal prices were not available.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 248 sheep and 1,291 lambs sold Sept. 23.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 2,039 sheep and 296 goats sold Sept. 23.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $270-$325 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $270-$320, 70-85 lb. were $240-$282.50, 86-105 lb. were $215-$234, and 106 lb. and heavier were $215-$234. Wool rams were $130-$160 per cwt. Cull ewes were $115-$185.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $260-$315, 55-69 lb. were $250-$305, 70-85 lb. were $230-$270, 86-105 lb. were $220-$255 and 106 lb. and heavier were $210-$230. Hair rams were $110-$160 per cwt. Cull ewes were $120-$175.
