Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was not available Aug. 30. It was $63.59 Aug. 23.

U.S. hogs averaged $76.64 on a carcass basis Aug. 30, down from $80.76 Aug. 23.

USDA’s August corn yield estimates are bearish

The yield estimates for wheat and soybeans were neutral to bullish, but these were largely a sideshow when compared with corn.

The U.S. pork cutout was $97.23 per hundredweight Aug. 23, down from $99.05 Aug. 23.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Aug. 30 was 2.392 million. It was 2.407 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.365 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Aug. 31 Signature Four price was $210.32 per 100 kilograms, down from $216.50.

The Aug. 31 Hams Marketing cash price was $208.32, while on Aug. 24 it was $214.50. HyLife was $223.30 this week, while on Aug. 24 it was not available. OlyWest was $215.30, down from $221.50 last week.

OlyWest 2021 was down, at $227, from $234, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $223.30 this week. On Aug. 24 it was not available.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices of $525-$550 per cwt., hot hanging weight, for finished bulls and $500-$525 per cwt. for finished heifers. Mature bulls were not available, while mature cows were $350-$375 per cwt.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$425-$450 per cwt. for bulls and $410-$425 per cwt for heifers. Prices for mature bulls and cows were not available. All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were not available.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 436 sheep and 797 lambs sold Aug. 26.

Beaver Hill Auctions at To field, Alta., reported that 1,966 sheep and 477 goats sold Aug. 26

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $250-$315 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $235-$305, 70-85 lb. were $230-$275, 86-105 lb. were $227-$262, and 106 lb. and heavier were $224-$255. Wool rams were $145-$210 per cwt. Cull ewes were $110-$200.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $230-$310, 55-69 lb. were $225-$265, 70-85 lb. were $220-$265, 86-105 lb. were $225-$260 and 106 lb. and heavier were $220-$260. Hair rams were $100-$200 per cwt. Cull ewes were $145-$200.
