Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts June 7 was $66.44. The price was not available for May 31. U.S. hogs averaged $85.98 on a carcass basis June 7, down from $86.90 on May 31.

The U.S. pork cutout was $100.91 per cwt June 7, down from $103.25 on May 31.

China’s grain imports have slumped big-time

China purchased just over 20 million tonnes of wheat, corn, barley and sorghum last year, that is well below the 60 million tonnes purchased in 2021-22.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to June 7 was 2.382 million, compared to 1.920 million the previous week. Slaughter was 2.302 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the June 8 Signature Four price was $223.48 per 100 kilograms, up from $221.54. The June 8 Hams Marketing cash price was $221.48, up slightly from the June 1 price of $219.54. HyLife was $237.32 last week, up from $235.50 on June 1. OlyWest was $225.50, up from $224.60 the previous week.

OlyWest 2021 was $238, up from $236, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $237.32 last week, almost the same as the June 1 price of $237.45.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices for finished bulls at $500 to $535 per cwt., hot hanging weight. Finished heifers were $495 to $515/cwt and mature bulls were $300 to $400/cwt. Mature cows were $300 to $400/cwt.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the U.S. were US$415 to $435/cwt for bulls. Heifers were $380 to $420. Mature bulls were $320 to $335, while mature cows were $300 to $330/cwt. All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were $2.95 per pound for bulls and $2.90 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better. Mixed live animal price was $2.53 to $2.88 per lb.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 133 sheep and 1,154 lambs sold June 3.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported 1,436 sheep and 363 goats sold June 3.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $260-$325 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $260-$305, 70-85 lb. were $260-$320, 86-105 lb. were $270-$330, and 106 lb. and heavier were $260-$325. Wool rams were $150-$240 per cwt. Cull ewes were $110-$265.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $260-$318, 55-69 lb. were $250-$288, 70-85 lb. were $240-$305, 86-105 lb. were $270-$310 and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$320. Hair rams were $150-$190 per cwt. Cull ewes were $150-$190.
