Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts May 31 was not available. U.S. hogs averaged $86.90 on a carcass basis May 31, down from $86.64 on May 24.

The U.S. pork cutout was $103.25 per hundredweight May 31, up from $99.14 on May 24.

Chinese stocks tumbled on Monday (8 July 2013) on speculations that the resumed trading of Treasury bond futures and new share offerings will hurt stock prices. The Shanghai Composite Index dropped 48.93 points, or 2.44 percent, to 1,958.27 at the close.No Use China. No Use France.

Bond market seen as crop price threat

A grain market analyst believes the bond market is about to collapse and that could drive down commodity values.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to May 31 was 1.92 million, down from 2.352 million the previous week. Slaughter was 1.902 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the June 1 Signature Four price was $221.54 per 100 kilograms, down from $223.54. The June 1 Hams Marketing cash price was $219.54, down slightly from May 25. The HyLife cash price was $235.50 last, also down from the previous week.

OlyWest was $224.60, down from $225.60 last week. OlyWest 2021 was $236, up slightly from $235.90 and HyLife’s adjusted price was $237.45 last week compared to 236.84 on May 25.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices for finished bulls at $500 to $535 per cwt, hot hanging weight. Finished heifers were $495 to $515 cwt. Mature bulls were $300 to $400 cwt, while mature cows were $300 to $400 cwt.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the U.S., also priced at hot hanging weight, were US$410 to $435 per cwt. for bulls and $380 to $405 per cwt. for heifers. Mature bulls were $320 to $335 and mature cows were $300 to $330 per cwt. Prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were $2.95 per pound for bulls and $2.90 per pound for heifers of good quality or better. Mixed live animal price was $2.53 to $2.88 per lb.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 168 sheep and 764 lambs sold May 27.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported 2,110 sheep and 466 goats sold May 27.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $250-$347 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $250-$305, 70-85 lb. were $245-$320, 86-105 lb. were $270-$312, and 106 lb. and heavier were $260-$310. Wool rams were $120-$265 per cwt. Cull ewes were $110-$250.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $245-$290; 55-69 lb. were $250-$280; 70-85 lb. were $245-$305; 86-105 lb. were $260-$315; and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$385. Hair rams were $155-$270 per cwt. Cull ewes were $110-$250.
