The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts May 17 was $67.60. It was $69.17 May 10.

U.S. hogs averaged $88.57 on a carcass basis May 10, up from $88.41 May 10.

The U.S. pork cutout was $100.85 per hundredweight May 17, up from $99.77 May 10.

USDA’s August corn yield estimates are bearish

The yield estimates for wheat and soybeans were neutral to bullish, but these were largely a sideshow when compared with corn.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to May 17 was 2.368 million. It was 2.370 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.334 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the May 18 Signature Four price was $221.90 per 100 kilograms, up from $220.98.

The May 18 Hams Marketing cash price was $219.90, up from $219.43 May 11. HyLife was not available this week, but on May 11 it was $235.32. OlyWest was $224.50, up from $223.60 last week.

OlyWest 2021 was up, at $233.90, from $233.10. HyLife’s adjusted price was not available this week, but on May 11 it was $235.32.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported that domestic carcass prices were $485-$510 per cwt. hot hanging weight for finished bulls and $475-$510 for finished heifers. Mature bulls were $300- $400 cwt., while mature cows were $300-$400 cwt.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the U.S. were US$410-$435 per cwt. for bulls, while heifers were $380-$405 per cwt. Mature bulls were $313-$326, while mature cows were $300-$315 per cwt. All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were $2.95 per lb. for bulls and $2.50 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better. The mixed live animal price was $2.51-$3.33 per lb.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 352 sheep and 366 lambs sold May 13.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 507 sheep and 154 goats sold May 6.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $225-$275 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $260-$325, 70-85 lb. were $275-$315, 86-105 lb. were $270-$335, and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$290. Wool rams were $130-$200 per cwt. Cull ewes were $130-$260.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $225-$275, 55-69 lb. were $250-$300, 70-85 lb. were $270-$305, 86-105 lb. were $250-$295 and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$290. Hair rams were $155-$215 per cwt. Cull ewes were $160-$280.
