Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts May 3 was $69.36. It was not available April 26.

U.S. hogs averaged $89.38 on a carcass basis May 3, down from $90.38 April 26.

The U.S. pork cutout was $98.12 per hundredweight May 3, up from $97.63 April 26.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to May 3 was 2.387 million. It was 2.375 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.318 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the May 4 Signature Four price was $220.43 per 100 kilograms, down from $221.90.

USDA’s August corn yield estimates are bearish

The yield estimates for wheat and soybeans were neutral to bullish, but these were largely a sideshow when compared with corn.

The May 4 Hams Marketing cash price was $218.43, down from $219.90 April 27, while HyLife was $234.27 this week, down from $235.42 April 27. OlyWest was $223.60, down from $226.20.

OlyWest 2021 was down, at $232.80, from $237.10, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $234.27, down from $235.87 April 27.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices of $485-$510 per cwt. hot hanging weight for finished bulls and $475-$510 per cwt. for finished heifers. Mature bulls were $300-$400 per cwt. and mature cows were $300-$400 cwt.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$410-$435 per cwt. for bulls and $380-$405 per cwt. for heifers. Mature bulls were $313-$326 while mature cows were $300-$315 per cwt. All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were $2.95 per pound for bulls and $2.50 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better. The mixed live animal price was $2.51-$3.33 per lb.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 428 sheep and 832 lambs sold April 29.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,386 sheep and 234 goats sold April 29.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $290-$335 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $290-$330, 70-85 lb. were $290-$335, 86-105 lb. were $275-$326, and 106 lb. and heavier were $270-$310. Wool rams were $150-$180 per cwt. Cull ewes were $120-$255.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $270-$320, 55-69 lb. were $260-$300, 70-85 lb. were $260-$320, 86-105 lb. were $270-$317 and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$290. Hair rams were $155-$250 per cwt. Cull ewes were $120-$250.
