Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts March 22 was not available; it was $58.27 March 15.

U.S. hogs averaged $79.30 on a carcass basis March 22, down from $79.94 March 15.

The U.S. pork cutout was $93.38 per hundredweight March 15, down from $93.47 March 15.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to March 22 was 2.437 million. It was 2.342 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.406 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the March 23 Signature Four price was $201.48 per 100 kilograms, up from $198.14.

Bond market seen as crop price threat

A grain market analyst believes the bond market is about to collapse and that could drive down commodity values.

The March 23 Hams Marketing cash price was $199.48, up from $196.14 March 16, while HyLife was $214.41 this week, up from $210.24 March 16. OlyWest was $199.9, up from $197.50.

OlyWest 2021 was up, at $213.40, from $211.70, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $215.33, up from $212.81 March 16.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices for finished bulls of $475-$550 per cwt., hot hanging weight, while finished heifers were $475-$510 per cwt. Mature bulls were $300-$400 per cwt., while mature cows were $300-$400.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$390-$425 for bulls and $340-$395 for heifers. Mature bulls were $313-$326, while mature cows were $300-$315 per cwt. All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were C$2.50-$3.70 per pound for bulls and $2-$2.70 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better. Mixed live animal prices were $1.60=$2.38 per lb.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 477 sheep and 1,059 lambs sold March 18.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,880 sheep and 615 goats sold March 18.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $300-$360 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $290-$375, 70-85 lb. were $290-$365, 86-105 lb. were $265-$350, and 106 lb. and heavier were $255-$315. Wool rams were $130-$287 per cwt. Cull ewes were $120-$219.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $260-$355, 55-69 lb. were $270-$365, 70-85 lb. were $280-$355, 86-105 lb. were $260-$340 and 106 lb. and heavier were $230-$275. Hair rams were $145-$225 per cwt. Cull ewes were $130-$275.
