Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts March 15 was $58.27. It was not available March 8.

U.S. hogs averaged $79.94 on a carcass basis March 15, up from $76.18 March 8.

USDA’s August corn yield estimates are bearish

The yield estimates for wheat and soybeans were neutral to bullish, but these were largely a sideshow when compared with corn.

The U.S. pork cutout was $93.47 per hundredweight March 15, down from $92.11 Mar. 8.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Mach. 15 was 2.342 million. It was 2.351 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.396 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the March 16 Signature Four price was $198.14 per 100 kilograms, up from $195.19.

The March 16 Hams Marketing cash price was $196.14, up from $195.50 March 9, while HyLife was $210.24 this week, up slightly from $210.19 March 9. OlyWest was $197.50, up from $195.

OlyWest 2021 was up, at $211.70, from $210.60, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $212.81, up from $211.54 March 9.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices for finished bulls of $475-$550 per cwt., hot hanging weight, while finished heifers were $475-$510 per cwt. Mature bulls were $300-$400 per cwt., while mature cows were $300-$400 cwt.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$390-$425 per cwt. for bulls, while heifers were $340-$395 per cwt. Mature bulls were $313-$326, while mature cows were $300-$315 per cwt. All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were C$2.50-$3.70 per pound for bulls and $2-$2.70 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better. The mixed live animal price was $1.60-$2.38 per lb.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 205 sheep and 673 lambs sold March 11.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,253 sheep and 163 goats sold March 4.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $300-$365 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $310-$375, 70-85 lb. were $325-$355, 86-105 lb. were $285-$325, and 106 lb. and heavier were $235-$280. Wool rams were $170-$192 per cwt. Cull ewes were $120-$190.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $260-$345, 55-69 lb. were $310-$375, 70-85 lb. were $315-$336, 86-105 lb. were $285-$305 and 106 lb. and heavier were $230-$263. Hair rams were $145-$175 per cwt. Cull ewes were $130-$200.
