Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $58.71 March 1. It was $56.50 Feb. 23.

U.S. hogs averaged $72.67 on a carcass basis March 1, up from $71.49 Feb. 23.

The U.S. pork cutout was $94.45 per hundredweight March 1, up from $91.16 Feb. 23.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter-March 1 was 2.443 million. It was 2.442 million n the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.396 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the March 2 Signature Four price was $195.19 per 100 kilograms, up from $189.58.

USDA’s August corn yield estimates are bearish

The yield estimates for wheat and soybeans were neutral to bullish, but these were largely a sideshow when compared with corn.

The March 2 Hams Marketing cash price was $187.58, the same as it was Feb. 24. HyLife was $207.69 this week, up from $204.22 Feb. 24. OlyWest was $191.80, up from $183.

OlyWest 2021 was up, at $208.90, from $200.70, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $210.60, up from $209.40 Feb. 24.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices for finished bulls of $475-$550 per cwt., hot hanging weight. Finished heifers were $465-$510 cwt. Mature bulls were $300-$400 cwt, while mature cows were $300-$400 cwt.

Carcass prices for bison being sold into the U.S. were US$390-$425 per cwt. for bulls, while heifers were $340-$395 per cwt. Mature bulls were $313-$326 while mature cows were $300-$315 per cwt. All prices are subject-fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were $2.50-$3.70 per pound for bulls and $2-$2.70 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better. The mixed live animal price was $1.60-$2.38 per lb.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 286 sheep and 415 lambs sold Feb. 26.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 720 sheep and 214 goats sold Feb. 26.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $300-$385 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $300-$380, 70-85 lb. were $285-$343, 86-105 lb. were $255-$315, and 106 lb. and heavier were $240-$280. Wool rams were $165-$192 per cwt. Cull ewes were $115-$260.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $290-$366, 55-69 lb. were $290-$353, 70-85 lb. were $280-$336, 86-105 lb. were $230-$305 and 106 lb. and heavier were $230-$263. Hair rams were $129-$251 per cwt. Cull ewes were $144-$175.
