Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts April 7 was unavailable; it was $56.90 on March 24.

U.S. hogs averaged $76.58 on a carcass basis April 6, up from $71.90 March 31.

The U.S. pork cutout was $81.05 per hundredweight April 6, up from $77.28 March 31.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to April 8 was 2.370 million, down from 2.393 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.380 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the April 1 Signature Four price was C$186.07 per 100 kilograms, down from $192.07.

China’s grain imports have slumped big-time

China purchased just over 20 million tonnes of wheat, corn, barley and sorghum last year, that is well below the 60 million tonnes purchased in 2021-22.

The April 1 Hams Marketing cash price was flat at $184.47, down from 190.07, HyLife was $197.51; on March 17 it was $215.42. OlyWest was $188.50, down from $196.10.

OlyWest 2021 was down, at $193.90 from $199.00 and HyLife’s adjusted price was unavailable; on March 17 it was $214.41.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 604 sheep and 1604 lambs sold April 3.

Beaver Hill Auctions in Tofield, Alta. reported that 1,630 sheep and 459 goats sold April 3.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $235-275 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $230-270, 70-85 lb. were $225-260, 86-105 lb. were $215-260 and 106 lb. and heavier were $210-270. Wool rams were $95-215 per cwt. Cull ewes were $75-181.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $200-250, 55-69 lb. were $220-250, 70-85 lb. were $216-240, 86-105 lb. were $215-240 and 106 lb. and heavier were $200-235. Hair rams were $90-240 per cwt. Cull ewes were $95-150.

Note: There is no bison report this week.
