Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was not available Jan 6.

U.S. hogs averaged $74.47 on a carcass basis Jan. 9, down from $74.98 Dec. 29.

The U.S. pork cutout was $84 per hundredweight Jan 9, down from $87.90 Dec. 30.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Jan. 9 was 2.296 million, down from 2.194 million the previous week.

In Canada, the Dec. 17 Signature Four price was C$198.13 per 100 kilograms, down from $201.31.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $196.13, down from $199.31, HyLife was down to $209.62 from $213.57, and OlyWest was $194.80, down from $198.60.

Canola support gets mixed response

A series of canola industry support measures announced by the federal government are being met with mixed reviews.

OlyWest 2021 was up, at $209.80, from $209.30, and HyLife’s adjusted price was down to $209.62 from $212.68.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada range from $4-$4.25 per pound hot hanging weight with the occasional sale higher. Most animals were purchased at $4.25 per pound. Canadian buyers are paying $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.50-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.75-$4 per pound hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.50-$3.75. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 372 lambs and 439 sheep sold Jan. 2.
