Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $72.78 Oct. 28. It wasn’t available Oct. 21.

U.S. hogs averaged $90.54 on a carcass basis Oct. 28, up from $88.89 Oct. 21.

The U.S. pork cutout was $101.34 per hundredweight Oct. 28, up from $100.94 Oct. 21.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Oct. 29 was 2.557 million, up from 2.571 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.552 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Oct. 29 Signature Four price was C$229.57 per 100 kilograms, down from $230.67.

Canada-U.S. trade relationship called complex

Trade issues existed long before U.S. president Donald Trump and his on-again, off-again tariffs came along, said panelists at a policy summit last month.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $227.57, down from $228.67, HyLife was down to $243.47 from $245.11 the previous week and OlyWest was $232.40, up from $230.20.

OlyWest 2021 was down, at $243.40, from $244.20, and HyLife’s adjusted price was down to $243.47 from $245.11.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada range from $4-$4.25 per pound hot hanging weight with the occasional sale higher. Most animals were purchased at $4.25 per pound. Canadian buyers are paying $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.50-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.75-$4 per pound hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.50-$3.75. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,048 sheep sold Oct. 24.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,144 sheep and 331 goats sold Oct. 24.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $200-$262.50 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $210-$255, 70-85 lb. were $200-$248, 86-105 lb. were $165-$214 and 106 lb. and heavier were $150-$178. Wool rams were $101-$125 per cwt. Cull ewes were $90-$160.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $170-$210 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $170-$205, 70-85 lb. were $175-$205, 86-105 lb. were $155-$190 and 106 lb. and heavier were $145-$175. Hair rams were $108-$165 per cwt. Cull ewes were $90-$158.
