Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts Aug. 19 was not available this week.

U.S. hogs averaged $117.80 on a carcass basis Aug. 19, down from $123.69 Aug. 15.

The U.S. pork cutout was $117.15 per hundredweight Aug. 19, down from $121.83 Aug 15.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Aug. 19 was 2.337 million, up from 2.332 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.202 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Aug 22 Signature Four price was C$270.48 per 100 kilograms, up from $268.60.

USDA’s August corn yield estimates are bearish

The yield estimates for wheat and soybeans were neutral to bullish, but these were largely a sideshow when compared with corn.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $268.48, up from $266.60, HyLife was up to $286.42 from $285.56 the previous week and OlyWest was $280.80, down from $281.80.

OlyWest 2021 was down, at $278.50 from $283.30, and HyLife’s adjusted price was up to $286.42 from $285.56.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada range from $4-$4.25 per pound hot hanging weight with the occasional sale higher. Most animals were purchased at $4.25 per pound. Canadian buyers are paying $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.50-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.75-$4 per pound hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.50-$3.75. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 717 sheep and no goats sold Aug. 15.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 790 sheep and 305 goats sold Aug. 15.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $180-$220 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $160-$227.50, 70-85 lb. were $159-$180, 86-105 lb. were $141-$197 and 106 lb. and heavier were $121-$155. Wool rams were $90-$145 per cwt. Cull ewes were $75-$138.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $120-$150 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $140-$190, 70-85 lb. were $135-$165, 86-105 lb. were $120-$155 and 106 lb. and heavier were $120-$150. Hair rams were $77-$120 per cwt. Cull ewes were $100-$115.
