Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts Aug. 8 was US$ 122.84.

U.S. hogs averaged $124.06 on a carcass basis Aug. 8, down from $117.08 July 29.

The U.S. pork cutout was $122.84 per hundredweight Aug. 08, down from $127.82 Aug 4.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to July 29 was 2.340 million, up from 2.282 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.3 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the July 30 Signature Four price was C$269.98 per 100 kilograms, up from $264.41.

Volatile temperatures expected for this winter

DTN is forecasting a lot of temperature variability in the Canadian Prairies this winter. Precipitation should be close to average.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $267.98, up from $262.4, HyLife was up to $286.23 from $281.63 the previous week and OlyWest was $279.50, up from $274.30.

OlyWest 2021 was up, at $276.40 from $269.00 and HyLife’s adjusted price was up to $281.63 from $270.61.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4.25 per lb. hot hanging weight for bison bulls and heifers with the occasional sale higher.

Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.50-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States. U.S. buyers are paying US$3.75-$4.00 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.50-$3.75. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,322 sheep and lambs sold July Aug 1. Lambs 95-110 lb. brought $1.80-$2.12, 65-80 lb. brought $2.18-$2.45.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported wool lambs 55-69 lb. were $180-$210 per cwt., 70-85 lb. were $175-$210, 86-105 lb. were $175-$200 and 106 lb. and heavier were $159-$220. Wool rams were $95-$165 per cwt. Cull ewes were $85-$141.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $145-$205 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $170-$190, 70-85 lb. were $160-$205, 86-105 lb. were $170-$195 and 106 lb. and heavier were $150-$190. Hair rams were $140-$165 per cwt. Cull ewes were $100-$160.
