Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $80.12 May 6. It was unavailable April 29.

U.S. hogs averaged $101.98 on a carcass basis May 6, up from $100.14 April 29.

The U.S. pork cutout was $104.70 per hundredweight May 6, up from $104.58 April 29.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to April 30 was 2.427 million, up from 2.403 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.396 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the May 6 Signature Four price was C$229.85 per 100 kilograms, down from $231.24.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $227.85, down from $229.24, HyLife was $245.53, up from $245.31 the previous week, and OlyWest was $233.80, up from $231.10. OlyWest 2021 was $238.10, down from $238.70, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $243.53, down from $245.31.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and $3.75-$4.15 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.60-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 734 sheep and 298 goats sold May 2.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $295-$360 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $330-$356, 70-85 lb. were $320-$359, 86-105 lb. were $290-$340 and 106 lb. and heavier were $275-$310. Wool rams were $100-$195 per cwt. Cull ewes were $90-$180.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $190-$260 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $250-$290, 70-85 lb. were $290-$340, 86-105 lb. were $280-$325 and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$310. Hair rams were $130-$180 per cwt. Cull ewes were $100-$160.
