Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $80.04 April 1, down from $82.39 March 25.

U.S. hogs averaged $100.87 on a carcass basis April 1, down from $108.84 March 25.

The U.S. pork cutout was $103.60 per hundredweight April 1, down from $109.90 March 25.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to April 2 was 2.442 million, up from 2.419 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.460 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the April 2 Signature Four price was C$226.20 per 100 kilograms, up from $224.01.

USDA’s August corn yield estimates are bearish

The yield estimates for wheat and soybeans were neutral to bullish, but these were largely a sideshow when compared with corn.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $224.20, up from $222.01, HyLife was $240.53, up from $238.22, and OlyWest was $231.40, down from $231.70. OlyWest 2021 was $234.10, up from $233.90, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $240.53, up from $238.22.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and $3.75-$4.15 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.60-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 500 sheep and 63 goats sold March 28. Goats and light lambs sold steady. Sheep and heavy lambs sold lighter.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 936 sheep and 437 goats sold March 28.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $275-$345 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $280-$365, 70-85 lb. were $270-$360, 86-105 lb. were $270-$330 and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$280. Wool rams were $120-$175 per cwt. Cull ewes were $90-$255.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $190-$260 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $230-$330, 70-85 lb. were $250-$330, 86-105 lb. were $250-$310 and 106 lb. and heavier were $230-$270. Hair rams were $100-$185 per cwt. Cull ewes were $150-$235.
