Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $82.39 March 25, up from $81.91 March 18.

U.S. hogs averaged $108.84 on a carcass basis March 25, up from $103.70 March 18.

The U.S. pork cutout was $109.90 per hundredweight March 25, up from $104.95 March 18.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to March 26 was 2.419 million, down from 2.430 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.547 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the March 26, Signature Four price was C$224.01 per 100 kilograms, down from $224.99.

Canada-U.S. trade relationship called complex

The Hams Marketing cash price was $222.01, down from $222.99, HyLife was $238.22, down from $239.01, and OlyWest was $231.70, up from $231.20. OlyWest 2021 was $233.90, down from $235.10, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $238.22, down from $239.01.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and $3.75-$4.15 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.60-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 14,89 sheep and 171 goats sold March 21. Goats and light lambs sold steady. Sheep and heavy lambs sold lighter.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,013 sheep and 264 goats sold March 21.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $250-$345 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $320-$395, 70-85 lb. were $310-$360, 86-105 lb. were $270-$335 and 106 lb. and heavier were $235-$285. Wool rams were $125-$185 per cwt. Cull ewes were $130-$230.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $200-$280 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $260-$335, 70-85 lb. were $280-$320, 86-105 lb. were $265-$330 and 106 lb. and heavier were $230-$280. Hair rams were $140-$175 per cwt. Cull ewes were $140-$245.
