Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $74.92 March 4, up from $72.64 Feb. 25.

U.S. hogs averaged $97.41 on a carcass basis March 4, up from $87.78 Feb. 25.

The U.S. pork cutout was $103.99 per hundredweight Feb. 18, down from $113.32 Feb. 25.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to March 5 was 2.427 million, down from 2.496 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.557 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the March 5 Signature Four price was C$222.17 per 100 kilograms, up from $207.85.

USDA’s August corn yield estimates are bearish

The yield estimates for wheat and soybeans were neutral to bullish, but these were largely a sideshow when compared with corn.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $220.17, up from $217.83, HyLife was $236.24, up from $234.70, and OlyWest was $226.90, up from $219.70. OlyWest 2021 was $239.40, up from $232.80, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $237.56, down from $240.38.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and $3.75-$4.15 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.60-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 926 sheep sold Feb. 28.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,157 sheep and 281 goats sold Feb. 28.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $280-$405 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $350-$410, 70-85 lb. were $325-$370, 86-105 lb. were $300-$345 and 106 lb. and heavier were $260-$295. Wool rams were $160-$215 per cwt. Cull ewes were $140-$255.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $220-$315 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $280-$335, 70-85 lb. were $290-$340, 86-105 lb. were $275-$330 and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$280. Hair rams were $170-$205 per cwt. Cull ewes were $170-$205.
