Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts wasn’t available Jan. 21. It was $50.14 Jan. 14.

U.S. hogs averaged $62.69 on a carcass basis Jan. 21, down from $63.84 Jan. 14.

The U.S. pork cutout was $93.29 per hundredweight Jan. 21, up from $89.70 Jan. 14.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Jan. 22 was 2.440 million, up from 2.366 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.718 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Jan. 22 Signature Four price was C$174.26 per 100 kilograms, up from $172.25.

Volatile temperatures expected for this winter

DTN is forecasting a lot of temperature variability in the Canadian Prairies this winter. Precipitation should be close to average.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $172.26, up from $170.25, HyLife was $186.66, up from $183.09, and OlyWest was $170.30, up from $169.40. OlyWest 2021 was $172.25, down from $186.30, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $195.46, up from $188.42.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and $3.75-$4.15 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.60-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 462 sheep and 28 goats sold Jan 17.
