Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts is $50.14 Jan. 14, was down from $51.03 Jan. 7.

U.S. hogs averaged $63.84 on a carcass basis Jan. 14 down from $66.95 Jan. 7.

The U.S. pork cutout was $89.70 per hundred weight Jan. 14, up from $85.90 Jan. 7.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Jan. 15 was 2.407 million, down from 2.568 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.644 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Jan. 15 Signature Four price was C$172.25 per 100 kilograms, up from $171.70.

Bond market seen as crop price threat

A grain market analyst believes the bond market is about to collapse and that could drive down commodity values.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $170.25, up from $169.70, HyLife was $183.09, up from $182.45, and OlyWest was $169.40 up from $166.70. OlyWest 2021 was $186.30 up from $185.90 and HyLife’s adjusted price was $188.42 up from $186.59.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4.00 – $4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls $3.75-$4.15 on heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60 – $4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40 – $4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.60-$4.00 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation, and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 629 sheep sold Jan 10.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 798 sheep and 166 goats sold Jan. 10.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $300-$415 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $360-$425, 70-85 lb. were $350-$405, 86-105 lb. were $268-$357 and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$291. Wool rams were $150-$195 per cwt. Cull ewes were $200-$250.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $280-$375 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $290-$394, 70-85 lb. were $340-$380, 86-105 lb. were $260-$296 and 106 lb. and heavier were $240-$275. Hair rams were $177-$190 per cwt. Cull ewes were $185-$250.
