Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $50.90 Oct. 22, down from $52.69 Oct. 15.

U.S. hogs averaged $65.63 on a carcass basis Oct. 22, down from $67.33 Oct. 15.

The U.S. pork cutout was $98.27 per hundredweight Oct. 22, down from $101.32 Oct 15.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Oct. 23 was 2.606 million, down from 2.625 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.676 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Oct. 23 Signature Four price was C$189.42 per 100 kilograms, down from $199.63.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $187.42, down from $197.63, HyLife was $199.43, down from $210.05, and OlyWest was $195, down from $206.90. OlyWest 2021 was $215.10, down from $228.60, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $206.92, down from $220.75.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and $3.90-$4.15 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.85-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,165 sheep, lambs and 87 goats sold Oct 18. Everything sold steady.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,927 sheep and 460 goats sold Oct 18.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $190-$240 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $200-$246, 70-85 lb. were $175-$217, 86-105 lb. were $175-$226 and 106 lb. and heavier were $195-$224. Wool rams were $135-$165 per cwt. Cull ewes were $125-$188.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $120-$170 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $135-$179, 70-85 lb. were $165-$195, 86-105 lb. were $175-$200 and 106 lb. and heavier were $180-$205. Hair rams were $135-$197 per cwt. Cull ewes were $110-$160.
