Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $52.69 Oct. 15, down from $54.71 Oct. 8.

U.S. hogs averaged $67.33 on a carcass basis Oct. 15, down from $69.26 Oct. 8.

The U.S. pork cutout was $101.32 per hundredweight Oct. 15, down from $106.99 Oct. 8.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Oct. 16 was 2.637 million, up from 2.597 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.685 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Oct. 16 Signature Four price was C$199.63 per 100 kilograms, down from $208.34.

Feedgrain prices expected to plummet

A massive U.S. corn crop is keeping a lid on Canadian feed barley prices.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $197.63, down from $206.34, HyLife was $210.05, down from $221.28, and OlyWest was $206.90, down from $212.20. OlyWest 2021 was $228.60, down from $234.00, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $220.75, down from $236.75.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and $3.90-$4.15 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.85-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 983 sheep and lambs and 59 goats sold Oct 12. Everything sold steady.
