Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $54.71 Oct. 8, down from $58.42 Oct. 1.

U.S. hogs averaged $69.26 on a carcass basis Oct. 8, down from $72.92 Oct. 1.

The U.S. pork cutout was $106.99 per hundredweight Oct. 8, up from $113.39 Oct. 1.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Oct. 9 was 2.597 million, up from 2.516 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.728 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Oct. 9 Signature Four price was C$208.34 per 100 kilograms, up from $207.30.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $206.34, up from $205.30, HyLife was $221.28, down from $221.36, and OlyWest was $212.20, up from $209.30. OlyWest 2021 was $234, up from $225.60, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $236.75 down from $238.03.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and $3.90-$4.15 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.85-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,312 sheep and lambs and 189 goats sold Oct. 4. Everything sold steady.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 2,063 sheep and 336 goats sold Oct. 4.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $150-$215 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $180-$225, 70-85 lb. were $170-$216, 86-105 lb. were $180-$215 and 106 lb. and heavier were $190-$220. Wool rams were $151-$185 per cwt. Cull ewes were $120-$170.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $100-$150 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $120-$176, 70-85 lb. were $130-$195, 86-105 lb. were $170-$200 and 106 lb. and heavier were $170-$195. Hair rams were $145-$175 per cwt. Cull ewes were $110-$160.
