Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts is $58.42 Oct. 1, was down from $58.43 Sept. 24.

U.S. hogs averaged $72.92 on a carcass basis Oct. 1 down from $76.93 Sept. 24.

The U.S. pork cutout was $113.39 per hundred weight Oct. 1, up from $110.77 Sept. 24.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Oct. 2 was 2.524 million, down from 2.578 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.612 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Oct. 2 Signature Four price was C$207.30 per 100 kilograms, down from $209.27.

China’s grain imports have slumped big-time

China purchased just over 20 million tonnes of wheat, corn, barley and sorghum last year, that is well below the 60 million tonnes purchased in 2021-22.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $205.30, down from $207.27, HyLife was $221.36, up from $221.13, and OlyWest was $209.30 down from $213.20. OlyWest 2021 was $225.60, down from $226.00 and HyLife’s adjusted price was $238.03 up from $228.12.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4.00 – $4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls $3.90-$4.15 on heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60 – $4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40 – $4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.85-$4.00 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation, and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 1426 sheep, lambs and 197 goats Sept. 27. Everything sold steady.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1410 sheep and 363 goats sold Sept. 27.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $210-$260 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $200-$250, 70-85 lb. were $190-$230, 86-105 lb. were $185-$210 and 106 lb. and heavier were $190-$210. Wool rams were $126-$185 per cwt. Cull ewes were $130-$190.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $170-$220 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $200-$236, 70-85 lb. were $180-$210, 86-105 lb. were $175-$210 and 106 lb. and heavier were $180-$210. Hair rams were $128-$170 per cwt. Cull ewes were $95-$188.
