Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts wasn’t available May 8, but was $26.34 on April 24.

U.S. hogs averaged $38 on a carcass basis May 8, up from $37.48 May 1.

The U.S. pork cutout was $116.50 per cwt. May 1, up from 106.61 May 1.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to May 9 was 1.768 million, up from 1.533 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.332 million last year at the same time.

In Canada the May 9 Signature Four price was C$168.72 per 100 kilograms.

Trump’s tariffs take their toll on U.S. producers

U.S. farmers say Trump’s tariffs have been devastating for growers in that country.

Hams Marketing cash price was $166.72. HyLife was $171.41 and OlyWest was $154.80. HyLife’s adjusted price was $203.46.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range were offered prices from C$3.50-$4.50 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$3.60-$4.15 per lb. with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers were offered C$3.50-$4.25 per lb. hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$3.40 – $3.80 per lb.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 629 sheep and lambs and 26 goats sold May 4. Light weight lambs sold higher. Heavy type lambs sold steady. Good sheep and goats also sold steady.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported 536 sheep and 195 goats sold May 4.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $240-$295 per cwt., 55 to 69 lb. were $250-$286, 70 to 85 lb. were $250-$285, 86 to 105 lb. were $225-$275 and 106 lb. and heavier were $190-$230.

Wool rams were $104-$180 per cwt. Cull ewes were $110-$177.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $240-$275 per cwt., 55 to 69 lb. were $230-$280, 70 to 85 lb. were $235-$270, 86 to 105 lb. were $210-$240 and 106 lb. and heavier were $180-$215.

Hair rams were $95-$130 per cwt. Cull ewes were $110-$157.
