Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts were $43.33 March 20, up from $39.29 on March 13.

U.S. hogs averaged $56.12 on a carcass basis March 20, up from $54.19 March 13.

The U.S. pork cutout was $80.04 per cwt. March 20, up from $69.84 March 13.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to March 21 was 2.790 million, up from 2.648 million the previous week.

Slaughter 2.503 million last year at the same time.

In Canada March 21 Signature Five price was C$151.40 per 100 kilograms, up from C$140.05 the week before.

China’s grain imports have slumped big-time

China purchased just over 20 million tonnes of wheat, corn, barley and sorghum last year, that is well below the 60 million tonnes purchased in 2021-22.

On a per hundred weight basis price was $68.67 up from $63.53 the week before.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association said Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range offering prices from C$4.25-$4.60 per pound hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$4.15/lb with returns dependent on exchange rates, quality and export costs.

Grade A heifers offerings of C$4-$4.40 hot hanging weight. U.S. buyers are offering US$3.80/lb.

Animals outside the desirable buyer specifications may be discounted.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 686 sheep and lambs and 62 goats sold March 19. All classes of sheep, lambs and goats sold on an active trade at higher prices.
